BLACK COWGIRL

I drove into the city. All the cars were scared. Nobody cared about winning, they just wanted to get there. There were empty chairs on the sidewalk. It was two blocks from nowhere. The light was dry and dull and my skull was brittle. There was nobody out there. And nobody but you that could love me. Nobody but you. I rolled on with the radio off and a little cough. There were millions of thoughts in my head. And a million more in the making and a couple of regrets dressed in red. I had to get home and see your face and know that was enough a listen to you breathing in our bed. And outside the world went on spinning and for a moment we were winning.

The sky aint pretty when it pushes down on you. The brown and blue flowers blossom under your skin. So many words on signs and windows and flashing lights and not one of them could describe you. Oh, I wish I had a pill that I could take that would erase everything from my memory except the things that you painted there. It's clear that we got a long way to go, but I want to take it slow like a cowgirl.

I watched you on your horse, bareback of course, you were more beautiful than anyone. The day was dying off and the earth was swallowing another angry sun. You turned your mare around towards me and rode strong and true and the ground held you up. It was another moment of thirsty life and I drank it up. Drank it up.
