BUZZ MAINTENANCE
I'd been walking in circles around the dining room table
counterclockwise
trying to push back the hands of time
I had a half empty bottle in one hand
and an unlit cigarette in the other
Trying to stop and start at the same time
I was working on a good buzz maintenance program
It's all in the pacing, I'm well aware of that
And there I was spiraling down straight into
that fake plastic fruit centerpiece on the dining room table
Why do I always do that
I'd used up all of God's favors
But I never heard him complain
I'm sure from up there in heaven
I look just like a cat's eye marble
rolling straight for the sewer drain
My old girlfriend moved to Seattle
"See ya baby"
I lost that other one's phone number
That's a hell of a start
I remember the night I met her
Her eyes just cleaned all the dirt straight out of my heart
So now I got to either finish this bottle
or light this goddam cigarette
Cause time's running out
and I don't even have a buzz.
