ABOVE THE SPLINTERED FLOORS

I came home from working
You were curled up purring
on the couch
like a sleepy cat
Your eyes were shining
and you sat in silence
while I told my stories
and you laughed at the ending
of a simple day alive
I came in the kitchen
where you stood there cooking
and I came up behind you
and kissed you without looking
The steam was rising
and your hands were gentle
and the space between us was strong and true

And I hold your memory
like a weak man staring
at the picture of a woman that he should be holding
And the wheels are turning
and the stars are turning
and the past is turning
but I am standing still

And I swear I don't know why
And I swear I don't know why
We never had to try
above the splintered floors.
